The continent of Antarctica lies in the centre of the Antarctic Plate. High mountain peaks are visible, but the continent is almost entirely covered by ice. This ice has formed over the last 15 million years and it now extends beyond the land as floating ice shelves. The largest of these is the Ross Ice Shelf.
